Red Cross Says West Bank Violence Makes Life Intolerable for Palestinians
The ICRC said dozens of Palestinians have lost their lives and hundreds more have been injured this year, while many others have been forced from their homes. It added that residential properties and other possessions have also been damaged or destroyed, leaving families without shelter or sources of income.
“The frequent and severe violence must be brought to an end,” said Julien Lerisson, head of the ICRC delegation for Israel and the Palestinian occupied territories.
“(Israeli) authorities have a responsibility to protect the population from violence, including when that violence is inflicted by settlers. What international humanitarian law says on the protection of private and public property, and on the population’s access to essential services, must be respected,” he added.
The organization described the humanitarian consequences of the violence, including deaths and serious injuries, as “overwhelming.”
It also warned that restrictions on movement are making it difficult for patients to obtain medical treatment, preventing children from reaching schools and limiting residents’ ability to access their homes and livelihoods.
