Israel Prevents Gaza Patients from Seeking Treatment Abroad
“For the second consecutive day, no patients or wounded people have been evacuated through the Rafah and Kerem Shalom crossings because of holidays observed by the occupation,” the ministry said in a brief statement.
Israeli authorities said the Rafah and Kerem Shalom crossings in southern Gaza were shut on Sunday and Monday due to Jewish holiday observances, according to reports.
The closures followed an earlier decision by Israel to sharply reduce the number of patients, injured people and accompanying relatives permitted to travel from Gaza to Egypt for medical care. The number was lowered from 136 to 61 Palestinians, according to a previous statement from the Health Ministry.
The ministry condemned the reduction as “a blatant violation of the right to treatment,” and warned that the restrictions could place hundreds of patients in danger by preventing them from reaching specialized medical facilities before their conditions become critical.
