France Denies Entry to Al-Haq Director, Blocking Europe Meetings

(MENAFN) France has refused entry to the director-general of the Palestinian human rights organization Al-Haq, preventing him from participating in a series of high-level meetings across Europe, the group said on Thursday.

In a statement, Al-Haq said Shawan Jabarin was denied a French visa at the “last minute,” blocking his planned engagements with officials at the French Parliament, the Foreign Ministry, and the Council of Europe.

He was also expected to take part in discussions at the European Parliament and Belgium’s Foreign Ministry as part of an advocacy tour centered on accountability and Palestinian rights.

The organization noted that while another representative still attended meetings in Paris and Brussels, the decision “severely undermined essential human rights advocacy efforts.”

Al-Haq added that Jabarin later secured a visa from the Netherlands, allowing him to continue his travel schedule and attend meetings in The Hague.

The group criticized France’s decision as inconsistent with its past recognition of its work, noting that the French Republic had awarded Al-Haq in 2018 for its human rights efforts, with Jabarin also receiving the honor.

It further suggested the visa refusal reflects growing international pressure on accountability mechanisms, pointing to a February 2025 executive order issued by US President Donald Trump imposing sanctions on the International Criminal Court, along with subsequent measures targeting ICC officials, UN Special Rapporteur Francesca Albanese, and Palestinian human rights organizations.
