Pro-Palestinian protesters get arrested by Dutch police in Amsterdam

(MENAFN) Dutch authorities detained 22 pro-Palestinian demonstrators on Sunday in Amsterdam during a protest against Shai Abramson, who serves as the chief cantor for the Israeli army and performs liturgical music.

Around 200 protesters gathered at Museumplein Square, across from the Concertgebouw concert hall, chanting slogans directed at Abramson. Police arrested 22 individuals, including some for possessing fireworks, according to reports.

Clashes reportedly occurred after officers fenced in demonstrators to keep them contained within the square. A preliminary injunction permitted 30 protesters to hold a silent demonstration at the Concertgebouw, while the rest were required to remain at Museumplein, based on an agreement with organizers.

Earlier in the day, a smaller protest blocked two entrances to the concert hall, leading to additional arrests.

Abramson was scheduled to perform at the Concertgebouw’s annual Hanukkah concert, but the venue requested that the organizer replace him—a request that was declined. The concert hall said his presence “is at odds with the Concertgebouw's mission to connect people with music.”
