The United Nations revealed Tuesday that more than 36,000 individuals have been forced to flee their homes across the Gaza Strip following Israel’s recent escalations targeting Gaza City earlier this month.

“People continue to flee in fear for their lives, seeking safety wherever possible,” UN spokesperson Stephane Dujarric declared during a press briefing, referencing data from the Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs (OCHA).

He detailed, “Between Aug. 14, when the offensive on Gaza City was announced, and yesterday, partners tracking population movements in Gaza recorded more than 36,200 displacements, including over 11,600 from the north to the south of the Strip.”

Highlighting the most recent surge, Dujarric added, “Of these, more than 2,000 were recorded between Aug. 24 and 25.”

According to the UN official, “The majority of displaced people came from neighborhoods in Gaza City, with more than two-thirds moving to Deir al Balah and nearly a third heading to Khan Younis.”

At the same time, he warned that “hostilities across the Gaza Strip, including Israeli shelling and airstrikes, continue to have a devastating impact on civilians.”

Dujarric also reported a fresh directive from the Israeli military ordering displacement affecting roughly one square kilometer in Gaza City's Ad Daraj and Ash Sheikh Radwan districts.

The UN emphasized that Israeli restrictions are significantly obstructing humanitarian operations. “Yesterday, six out of 12 planned missions that required coordination with the Israeli authorities were facilitated,” Dujarric reported, adding that three missions faced delays, two were cancelled, and one road repair mission in Khan Younis was completely denied.

Since October 2023, Israeli military operations have claimed the lives of nearly 63,000 Palestinians in Gaza, leaving the territory in ruins and on the brink of famine.

International legal proceedings are also underway: Last November, the International Criminal Court issued arrest warrants for Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and former Defense Minister Yoav Gallant for war crimes and crimes against humanity linked to Gaza. Israel is concurrently facing a genocide case at the International Court of Justice over its conduct in the enclave.
