Trump Says Gaza Ceasefire Agreement Imminent
(MENAFN) U.S. President Donald Trump expressed optimism on Sunday about the prospects of brokering a ceasefire agreement between Israel and Hamas, suggesting a breakthrough could be imminent.
“Gaza -- we are talking, and hopefully we're going to get that straightened out over the next week,” Trump told reporters during remarks at Joint Base Andrews in Maryland.
Earlier, Trump had confirmed that Israel had agreed to the core terms of a proposed 60-day ceasefire in Gaza. The plan, which was conveyed to Hamas through mediation by Qatar and Egypt, is now under active negotiation.
Hamas issued a positive response, indicating its willingness to move forward with the talks aimed at implementing the truce and carrying out a hostage exchange.
Despite initially rejecting Hamas’ proposed amendments to the Qatari plan, Israeli officials still dispatched a delegation to Doha to continue negotiations.
Talks in Doha have centered on securing a 60-day halt in fighting, the release of 10 live and 18 deceased Israeli hostages, and paving the way for discussions on a long-term ceasefire.
While negotiators reportedly made progress on several fronts, a major impasse remains: Israel's demand to retain control over a security buffer zone surrounding Gaza’s borders.
Even in the event of a truce, Israel has declared it will maintain military operations in Rafah and establish a so-called “collection camp,” which is reportedly tied to its broader goal of relocating Palestinians to third countries.
